Frugal Challenge Update-The Proof is in My Electric Bill

Well, it had been a month since we had unplugged our refrigerator in the garage and made a few other changes to save energy and keep our electric bill down this summer. You can find the complete post here.
Though I never look forward to getting my electric bill I was curious to see if the changes we made would make a big difference. I was pleasantly surprised. Our bill for the previous month which included most of June which was fairly mild was $194. We had run our a/c but not daily. The latest bill where we had ran the air everyday was only $4 more. I was so excited.
To be able to run the air and keep the bill down that much was so worth the efforts. We will definitely unplug the fridge in the garage for the summers from now on. It really has not been hard to squeeze everything in. I mostly just have not bought more than the meat I need for the week. That bill should have easily been much more.

Congrats! You are a girl after my own heart! I am always trying to decrease my utility bills. My last city bill(includes electricity, water, sewer)was under $100.00! Awesome !
Keep up the good work!

You go girl! We have a Huge OLD house and our bill has run around $200 last month. We keep the thermostat on 78 at all times and just run the ceiling fans, which I know at not cool decorating but gotta have them in the south!

Ugg! Thermostat set at 80 degrees, this months bill is $350 for a 1500 sq ft house. Ain't Phoenix great?

That's great! We are slowly converting to cfl's (now they have equivalents to 100 watts, and the light quality is much better than a few years ago), and we have our tv and other electronics plugged into toggle switches that completely shut them off when not in use -- that has saved a surprising amount.

wow..good for you!! I know that we could not do without our fridge in the garage. Although I hate to think of the energy it draws. Our fridge inside is so small. You wouldn't think so to look at it, but those darn side by sides make horrible use of space. We keep all of our drinks in the outside fridge, and any overflow too. And the freezer is also jam packed. We did notice a big difference though since getting our new windows, roof and insulation last year!!!

Congrats Elaine. Always makes one feel so efficient to see proof like that.
I heat my water with gas and last year changed to an HE washer and started washing in cold water plus started using the smart wash cycle on my dishwasher. Result was a $400.00 credit!!
I was pretty proud of myself.
Keep up the good work.

Unfortunatly we have had to run our A/C all the time the last week...but it seems to be cooling down a few degrees. Our electric bill isn't too bad because it's just the two of us.

Congratulations! I always try to air dry as much as I can too to save on the electric bill. And in Arizona the "cold" water is always warm anyway in the summer.

That is fantastic! Yay for you!!! :o)
A couple of things we are doing differently, to conserve energy and lower our electric bill, is washing dishes by hand. We have always loaded our dishwasher throughout the day and then ran it at bedtime. And another thing we are doing is hanging our clothes to dry. I have set a couple of days aside to do laundry and with it being so hot outdoors, things dry pretty fast. :o) Our bill hovers around $200.00 and we are in a 3000 sq. foot house and live in a hot climate. Yay!! :o) My husband changed out all our light bulbs a while back, to the efficient ones and sealed gaps. :o)
A penny saved is a penny earned huh?? :o)
Sincerely, Trish

I say wow. This is something we need to do. Just think of the extra groceries we could by just by reducing the electric bill. Thanks for the great advice.
