Word for the Year

I am a little late on a post like this I guess. I have seen others in blog land do posts on their word for the year and I think it is a great idea but I had to put some thought into what mine this year would be. Better than making resolutions but more of a theme for our lives. A direction we want to head to accomplish goals for happier and better living.

                                                          My Spice Cabinet

Well, I already pretty much have ascribed to the pursuit of "contentment."  And maybe "frugal" but that really was started a couple of years ago and is a life long word now.

After putting some real thought into where I wanted to make improvements in my life that would bring about changes that could improve the areas of my life that just plain need improving, I chose ORGANIZATION as my word for the year. I have long been on the pursuit of becoming a more organized person as I just was not born that way. I am so envious of those that it just comes naturally too. My mind just bounces from here to there and I have been trying hard to study up on how one trains oneself to become organized. I don't know that you can ever think that way but at least in my daily routines and how I run the house.

                                                  Organize Incoming Paperwork

I have come a long way and generally we can find what we are looking for but there is so much room for improvement. I want to get all our files straightened and streamlined. I want to really clean out our garage. Boxes that I cannot tell what's in them need to be gone through and only stackable bins remaining. Just a thorough going over of things. Love organized spaces and get a rush when I make that happen here. The routine of maintaining them is the hard work.

So in between all the other stuff we do every day to keep a household running and my other goals for the year, I want to squeeze in some dedicated time to this task. That is the only way I will get to it is if I look at my daily list and see a time alloted for it. Organizing maybe isn't fun but it is vital for a smoother life wouldn't you agree?
Remember to stop back in tomorrow as the Frugal Five share part three of the Thrifty Living Series.

  1. I love your word! I was in the grocery store yesterday and spied a new publication by Martha Stewart that is all on the subject of organizing yourself. Didn't pick it up, but I may just go back today and get it.

  2. Know exactly what you mean. I am an organization freak. Seriously...lists about my lists, a place for everything/everything in its place kind of girl. Disorganization drives me batty, which must be why a higher power thought it was a good idea for my one and only to be a challenge to that notion...something about teaching me patience and timing...

  4. That was my word last year and it did make a difference in my life. I'm continuing it this year but using the word Change as my word of the year. Good luck and it feels so good to be organized.

  6. Yes, organization makes life easier so you don't have that millstone of clutter around your neck! I think February will be my month to start thinning out. I've noticed that the Goodwill stores are much busier than usual, due to a horrid economy. It would probably be a good idea to get those un-needed clothes and other items to them NOW.

  7. This could be my word too! Too much stuff in our little home, need to declutter and organize my things! I've made a start in our kitchen, but the home isn't the worst, it's the barn..... Oh my want to organize that for ages and I can't find the energy to do it. Maybe this year????

  8. Great choice Elaine! I need to add that to my list. When I get involved with a project, I tend to make a real mess!
    Paint, beads, etc, etc!

  14. I would definitely agree about it being key to smoother living. When my life and home are organized, everything else runs so much more smoothly.

  16. I think maybe I need to adopt your word! I'm like you...never was organized and my mine flits from one project to another like a bee in a flower garden! Funny thing is my youngest is very organized. She definitely didn't learn it from me. She developed that way of life in her early teens. She figured it was easier to stay organized than to stay unorganized. I think I may have to learn a thing or two from her :)

  17. Elaine, I love your word. I am one of those, probably OCD people, that MUST be organized!! I can't stand things being out of order, but most of the time, they are. I am like you, I have wanted to choose a word for the year, but I think I have too many! I can't decide.

  18. I love me an organized space. Mister is the exact opposite. I suppose we balance each other out, but it would be much easier for two people of the "same" liking to share a space. Just thinkin'...
    LOL

  19. I understand what you're saying, I am not an organized person either. I try really hard, though. It helps that my husband is an ultra-organized person.
Good luck in finding a way to be organized, it really does make us feel better doesn't it.
    Hugs, Cindy

  21. I love when things are organized, but like you it is hard for me to do and keep. I think creative people tend to be messier. I do have plans though, to not only organize my living spaces better, but to organize my life in general in a better way. Hope that makes sense. Hope you will share some of your techniques with us.
