I have been growing chives for about 15 years and they are all from the same one plant I bought so long ago.
Here they survive all winter in the ground or a pot but I whack them back once a year in the winter. I rarely if ever buy green onions and just use fresh chives instead in recipes. You can use them by themselves or chopped up with a little minced onion. They divide easily and if you live in a cold region I am sure you could over winter them in a pot set in a sunny window.
They require just some water. I never feed them and they just keep going and growing. This year I have divided ones potted up away for Mother's day gifts.
Remember to join me tomorrow for Sunny Simple Sundays.
I hardly buy green onions either anymore! Love the purple flowers they produce also! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you!! They are great and so easy, do you know I thought i wouldn't be able to keep them growing but the same big pot last all winter under the snow and come up every spring on our balcony They must be tough to take our cold Canadian winters!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful weekend,
I brought mine up with me from the coast, both garlic, and regular.
ReplyDeleteLove em, can't be without them, if I was only allowed one herb..chives it would be.

I need to grow them. I have a favorite pasta salad I make that I put dried chives in.
ReplyDeleteI like chives better than green onions. You are so lucky that you can grow them where you live!
ReplyDeleteI really need to grow chives, they are so pretty as well as useful.
ReplyDeleteI will try to join you again tomorrow.
Hugs, cindy

Chives are in the allium family and very beautiful in bloom. You can dig up a little spot and use it like a spike in your flower pots. Very versatile in the garden and the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI love chives and have a patch of them, too. I use them in a lot of things and especially like floating them on top of soup. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI grow my own chives, too. Don't you love their beautiful blossoms? I think those are wonderful mother's day gifts!!
ReplyDeleteI love chives too and have been enjoying my plant for years. Each spring I look forward to seeing the fresh green new growth and the pretty flowers too. I love their delicate flavor and use them in so many recipes. Isn't it wonderful that something so easy to grow gives us such pleasure every year!

My chives are doing great in my wagon herb garden! I'm going to start substituting them for green onions! I went to buy some this weekend and they were $1.69 for ONE SMALL BUNCH! I didn't get them!
