It's Here IT'S HERE!!!!

Our first egg has arrived. Not charming I know but it is here. There is a long story so brace yourself cause nothing in our house is ever easy. There always has to be some chaos in all events.

Okay so Flower Muffin, the chicken I suspect was ready to start laying by her size, started acting very strange around 5:00 p.m. yesterday. She just was frozen, barely walking and not eating. You can see her there by the waterer. She was frozen there and wobbly. I then decided to isolate her from the others in case she was sick. We put her in the garage in our dog's crate with some water and newspaper. I then made my newly graduated RN daughter dawn some gloves and examine her for an egg being bound. She didn't feel anything but the massaging must have moved things along. I gave Q a bath and took her for a walk and when we came back I saw it laying there. All gross and oozing, but an egg. It was squishy and soft so I tossed it, but it is common for the first egg to be weird. So it has happened.

This girl, Q's chicken, gave us the first egg. Lets hope she gives us some we can eat now. They have oyster shell to help with strong shells but I just put it out so we will see. Q was so funny, she wanted to know could she go to the neighbor's house and tell them we had an egg.

Congratulations. Q would be welcome to come tell me about her egg. Children are always so eager to share their excitement....love it. Yeah!

Yay! Maybe you will get another today. The first egg is indeed often funky.

I coarsely crush up the eggshells from eggs that I have used from my girls after the shells have sat and dried out a bit, and feed them to the chickens -- away from the hen house so they hopefully don't make a connection with eggs they lay and start pecking and breaking those -- and that helps strengthen their shells. If they hatch chicks they intuitively eat the shells.

Yay, it's an egg!!! My friend just started having chickens, too - her first egg came this week and it was only half an egg. Apparently the first ones are a little strange. I'm happy with Q, it's exciting news!

I recently started getting eggs myself! Yay - some are weird, some are little, some look like they got stuck somewhere. I've even had one where it looked like it cracked getting squeezed of the chicken!

Congrats - you are in the egg business now!

Congrats. Does Hallmark make a card for such an event? :) She is on her way to many more eggs. You are right, that first egg is gross.

Hooray! I am so excited for you! I wonder why she was acting so strange before she laid though? I hope she wasn't egg bound! You should be getting better eggs now. When I mix their feed, I mix one 50 pound bag of lay kracket, and pour in about 2/3 a 25 pound bag of scratch, and one whole bag of oyster shell. I mix it all up, and then using a giant bird feed scooper, I put one whole scoop of mixed feed into the run every morning. In the afternoon, they roam for bugs and such, and I supplement greens and scraps.
Congratulations Chicken Mama!!!!!
Let the egg laying begin!!!

I can hear Q talking about her chicken's first egg!

That IS exciting! My next door neighbor has a couple of ducks, so maybe, just maybe, I could get away with having a couple of city chickens!

Hi Elaine!

What a pretty hen. I guess that first egg must be a strange experience for a young hen. Soon she will be popping one out about every day or so.

Thanks for sharing this at my party :)

The first egg! Yay! I remember when my boys found the first egg a few years ago... they fought over who was going to eat it. Save your egg shells in abowl and smash them up... then feed them back to your chickens to help replenish lost calcium. They'll love to eat the pieces, too! I miss our hens... we're going to keep fighting.

ah! Elaine!!!!
How on earth did I miss this post? I don't know.
But YAY! congrats on the new layer!
I am glad you isolated her and helped with massaging. That seemed to work. One thing about your chickens when one gets laid...you know it's from your baby chicks. We've had such strange goings on here...and there appeared in the yard a lone egg one day...but we're just not sure who laid it? you know?

anyway-- congrats! Pat
