How to cover your grey roots between colorings is maybe the best frugal tip I have ever shared here on the blog. Not sure why I have waited so long.
Sorry for the extreme closeup of my scalp but it was hard to get a picture by myself. So you can see I have about five weeks of regrowth here. Holding out until six weeks. I am trying to go longer between colorings to save money.
Take an eye shadow that is close to your hair color. Use a small makeup brush or paint brush and dip the brush in water and then into the eye shadow. Like water paints when you were a kid. Then just paint down your part or where the grey shows. Let is dry and it will last and last until you wash it again.
Here are the results.
Amazing isn't it? I go two days and it lasts the entire time until I shampoo my hair again.
My daughter bought me this grey root cover and I love it. Goes on great and lasts until the next time you shampoo. The brush is perfect for applying the fill in powder to cover grey hair between color.
You can find the grey root touch up here. Less than $7 and has lasted me a long time.
Oh wow, such a good idea. I need a perm and color really bad. Have to get busy and get that done. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's really a good idea! Lookin' good, Elaine;)
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Leslie
Ps...although I do have my Cosmo license, I'm still going longer for my color! Product is expensive.... At least the dark roots are in now! Hehe
Morning Elaine,
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea, have never heard that one before. I have seen the crayons and the ones that look like mascara, but with hair color. Thanks
for sharing that........
Blessings, Nellie
Well, I would have to have probably a whole gallon of eye shadow to cover my gray hair!! LOL Looks good on you tho.
ReplyDeleteJudy
What a great tip! I'm off to shower and paint my hair now! Thanks
ReplyDeleteAwesome tip! Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a smart idea! I just found my first gray or should I say white hair in the last month! yikes!
ReplyDeletewow, that's a neat trick!
ReplyDeleteIm so jealous that you can do this!!! I have to wash my hair daily or you can fry chicken in my head!! I have to color my WHITE roots every 2-3 weeks..at home tho! The price of beauty! Great tip!
ReplyDeleteAn even more frugal tip would be to go grey!!! I know that is tough to do for many women, but that is what I have chosen to do and it isn't difficult at all.
ReplyDeleteHugs, cindy
:-) I will have to pass this tip on to my best friend who is not ready to stop doing overall color. As for me...I just add a few very fine highlights/lowlights (to put a bit of light back in) and leave the rest of my hair it's real color (3/4 gray 1/4 light brown) and then you can't really see the grow lines.
ReplyDeleteWell I never would have thought of that. It worked nicely!
ReplyDeleteI recently gave up my hair coloring at the salon in an attempt to be frugal, and researched the best home products, and Jason has been doing my hair for me at home once a month. It's been working out great and only about $7 a month!
I also have taken on cutting his hair and either Jason or I cut Luke's hair.
I'm not brave enough to let him try cutting my hair, so I still have that expense about every 6-8 weeks. :)
But these changes have saved us!
Have a great week, Elaine. And thanks for participating in Pinned it Made it Monday.
Tammy
I use this trick, too, Elaine. It also helps if you have thinning hair. I go for about 8 weeks, and my hair is really dark! ;-) xo
ReplyDeleteWow! I think I would need a bucket of shadow though!!! Great tip!!

I've been using a brown, stick, like lip-stick for it and it's also pretty effective...but I like this better! Thank you so much, I will try it! Have a nice week.

Especially good tip if you have a function to go to and just realize your roots are showing more than you want. Great tip!
ReplyDeleteI'm allergic to hair dye and I have to use henna. You can color you hair more often with henna but it is time consuming, so I use the stick. I like it but it can get on your clothing if you aren't careful. I wish it lasted longer when I apply it to my temples.
ReplyDeleteGreat tip, but I don't color my hair. I'm lucky that I just started getting gray in my hair about five years ago!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I will SO be using this tip. I don't always get all the gray at my temples when I dye my hair. Now I won't have to stress it.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing tip! So frugal and easy. Glad it worked so well for you!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! You are absolutely the smartest one!
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia :)
I will have to try that, I've been using a touch up wand from Avon, next time I run out I'm digging through my eye shadow.
ReplyDeleteYou have GOT to be kidding me! Elaine, it seriously looks like you had your roots touched-up...this is too cool! I'm amazed! I could actually use this tip right now because my hair is a fairly normal color right now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the tip, and I'm *mad* that you've been holding out on us!!! ;P
What??
ReplyDeleteAmazing trick.
This is too easy... thanks so much
ReplyDeletefor the tip!
Tomorrow am I'll be doing this!
Sandy
Amazing but I have given up altogether! LOL! I'm looking pretty "mousy" but no one sees me much except checkout people at the grocery store. I was hoping it would come in white but no...it's that salt and pepper but I'm okay with if so far....it's been a couple months. But I am lots older than you are!
ReplyDeletegreat tip I use the in between color because I have all over dark hair.
ReplyDeleteCathy
What a fabulous idea! I no longer color mine because it became so expensive to have it colored every 4 weeks. I let it go grey, and I have to say, I dearly love it! It's much easier, and I get so many compliments on it, and even on my makeup. I'm told it looks good too. I think it's because I was meant to be gray. When I colored it, I would have loved to know this trick! You go girl! Oh, and I'm older so gray doesn't bother me anymore. :)
ReplyDeleteI grew mine out last year and it was SO much SOFTER! I did it for a while, but went back. I do mine about every 8 weeks at home, not too bad. I wash my hair every day so that wouldn't work for me sadly...
ReplyDeleteExcellent tip! Thank you Elaine, looks like it works well :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good tip! My hair is light...roots are light, so they don't show very bad. This Florida sunshine bleaches my hair out...but I'm not complaining!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip, Elaine! I'm wondering if I could make that work on my dark roots from highlighting. Now where is my obsolete white eye shadow....lol!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing! I wish I didn't have so much gray. It would take me forever to cover all of it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your tip at Motivation Monday!
This is genius! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Great idea!
