Backyard Chickens Update

It has been a while since I shared about our new chickens. They are so cute and I really am loving chicken keeping again.

All the girls are at laying age now but with much shorter daylight hours we have not seen an egg yet. Maybe not till after the first of the year when days start getting longer. Their combs are starting to get really red but that's a good sign we are getting closer.

I bought this red and white flower basket for their coop to bring in a little Christmas color. It cheers me up much more than them I am sure.

chicken coop,

The chickens spend their days scratching and dust bathing. For the most part these bantams are a little more skiddish than my other girls but I am fine with that. I do not chase them around traumatizing them. If I need to pick one up I do it in the evenings when they have settled on their roost in the coop.

Cupcake remains the most inquisitive of the bunch and will come and see what I am doing at all times. She stares down our chihuahua like she is saying," come at me bro." They crack me up. All healthy and happy for now and waiting on what Santa will bring them. All of our animals get a present on Christmas morning. Do you do that with your pets?

  1. You have no idea how happy I am that you have your chickens again! I want chickens too, but today when I look at the thermometer that reads -14 F., I think I wouldn't like to have chickens in the wintertime. Taking the dogs out and feeding the birds is a lot less work than taking care of chickens and a coop. I'll enjoy watching your chickens. :-)

  4. They are all looking really good! I think they will lay before the the daylight hours change. Mine are. Not the older ones, as they are all in molt. But I am getting several every day from the younger group.
    Love their basket of flowers.

  10. They are such pretty girls! I've never raised bantams, but it seems like they are a bit more wary of people than standard chickens. I hope you get some eggs soon!
