This time of year calls for picnics and camp outs. Long before all the bottled waters and drinks you can purchase nowadays, you had to bring along whatever liquid libation you desired in a container.
I was trying to think the other day what we did when I was a kid for bringing along water and basically we mostly didn't. You looked for a water fountain or drank from someone's hose. If we were heading out on a day trip we would fill up this big white drink dispenser with ice water or lemonade.
By far my favorite is this Tam O' Shanter Jug. How cool it was in plaid with its bright yellow spigot and cap.
Love them!
ReplyDeleteI love the big jug, how we would cut down on waste if we all went back to this...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy parents had this big jug like your Tam O Shanter, filled with lemonade or tea usually. We did picnics nearly every Sunday in the summer at this "wayside" on a creek - Daddy would crank up the grill while we kids played in the creek, then we'd eat. Good memories you've evoked - thanks :)
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a lot of these flasks that I used when we were harvesting...or my husband was working late. I would make baskets full... of boxes of sandwiches and cakes and flasks full of tea ready for the men working in the fields. Seems a long time ago. I miss those times but NOT...washing the empty flasks and boxes...usually about 11pm before I went to bed...that's unless we had anything calving!! Joan
ReplyDeleteGreat collection! I have a big jug that is plaid and tan color with a red handle. Do you use yours? I haven't tried, not sure if safe. But, what is these days...I heard the other day they are now saying drinking from the hose isn't safe. Whatever!
ReplyDeleteOh wow...I like the yellow plaid.
ReplyDeleteLove the yellow check thermos! I always remember my mom traveling with her red plaid thermos. Every road trip or visit to see me, the thermos made the trip carrying her coffee for the road. Simple, delightful memory sparked by this post, Elaine. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMy father had a local driving route on his job. He always took a Thermos with him. I think of him when I see one.
ReplyDeleteThose are all so great, Elaine! I have a tall aluminum one that my dad used to take his coffee to work in everyday. And yes, I well remember on trips or picnics our drinks usually came out of a handy thermos! We are spoiled these days! But we were lucky back then too. Ann
ReplyDeleteI love them all, but yes the green is great!
ReplyDeleteI love your vintage thermoses. They do make me think of summer picnics.
ReplyDeleteblessings
you have a great collection!!
ReplyDeleteLove them! I think the yellow check is my favorite! Oh the days of water fountains and hoses...so simple back then! Have a great day!!
ReplyDeleteYou have a great collection! I laughed out loud about drinking from the water hose...or even just from a spigot! Gosh those were the days. Hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteThose vintage thermos's make great vases too! Love them.
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
Aren't they fun? I just bought a red thermos today myself!
ReplyDeleteThose are really great! They remind me of camping!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Leslie
I actually remember using them!!!! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI love those too Elaine! Yep, when we were kids, we drank from a hose or the fountains.
ReplyDeleteWe lived.

What an adorable collection! Thank you for sharing your your lovely post at Potpourri Friday!
ReplyDeleteLike you ...we made enough for a crowd. My parents used a huge Igloo cooler.
ReplyDeleteAt one time, I even think we had a galvanized cooler (the lid was tough to remove on that one) but it had the little attachment on the side for the little paper cone/cups!
Ice cold lemonade...the drink of the day!
...around the neighborhood, we drank from the hose, same as you! Pat
Hi Elaine!
ReplyDeleteOh...I love the colors red and yellow side by side. The yellow checked thermos is wonderful...Your family will always have cool drinks for every outing.
I hope you are getting settled back in after your Oregon trip. We just traveled along the Rogue River last weekend and I thought of you.
Have a great weekend!
Blessings,
Carolynn

ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen our picnic jug lamps Trip made for the cabin? They are too much fun.
You have a great collection, Elaine.
What a great collection! I remember having / using thermos too! And I remember having a thermos going in a lunchbox for school lunches
ReplyDeleteVery cool Elaine -- when I was a kid we picnic-ed a lot and there was ALWAYS the big stainless steel drink container complete with spigot -- I have no idea where that thing came from or ultimately where it ended up but it went on probably a bazillion picnics with us :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gail
Elaine these are darling. I love old thermos's and pick them up whenever I see them. I especially like the tartan plaid ones. Your collection is so cute.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jann
These are all wonderful! I love that last one and the yellow and white checked one. I still like to use these when we head out for a day or a trip.
ReplyDeleteI love your collection of beverage dispensers; & because I'm "old," I remember each one. Lemonade or iced tea never tasted quite as cold as it did when served from one of those large thermos jugs!
ReplyDeleteCAS
The yellow one is insanely cute!!!
ReplyDeleteLove them.
