A Very Traumatic Day

I had lots of plans for yesterday. A big long list of things I wanted to accomplish. That was until about 8:00 am when I heard a horrible commotion at our front gate. Now crashing of the gate is not uncommon. One kid ran into them as a new driver, others slam them like, well I don't know what like, but they slam them too hard and our dog crashes into them trying to protect us from flies and bugs in the front yard.

This was different and my dog was inside so what heck was that sound. I run to the kitchen to see a woman trying to get a leash on a husky and then dashes into a car and drives off.

I started to search around and to check and see what had happened and then I realized our old boy Sneakers is usually sleeping in his little bed in the mornings on our front porch. He is 13 and the best darn cat ever.

I go out front and see lots of paw prints and cat hair and start to really freak. Where is my cat? I searched all around and finally found him on the back wall. He was completely freaked out too. Scared, he tried climbing the telephone poll to get away from me and fell. Oh poor guy.

I ran in and called my husband cause he is the other side of my brain and I needed him to calm me down. So while on the phone with him I took a little tuna juice in a bowl and put it on the wall and he finally came over lured by the scent.

I scooped him up and brought him in for an exam. He was muddy from the planter I am sure he tried to escape in, and full of dog slobber and a little banged up but thank God he seemed more mentally injured than anything else.

I put him in with his food and fresh water and he slept there for a while and just left him to calm down.

Later he left and I found him hiding in the corner of our den so we left him quietly.

He finally jumped up on the couch and we let him rest and he slept there for about eight hours until my hubby came home and he scooped him up and cuddled him cause the only two males in our house have a bond and if I was sad for the cat, you know my husband was even more so.

He checked him over really well and he had some missing claws we hope are still stuck in that dog but he seems fine but traumatized.

He slept in the service porch last night all cuddly and safe as he always does but he has not asked to go out yet. I wonder if he will ever sleep in his little bed made for him by my hubby again. I hope he can forget soon poor guy, but needless to say I didn't get much done on my list. I was shot.

Yes he is an indoor/outdoor kitty. He was a rescue and he was living outside full time when we rescued him. He loves to be outdoors but we do bring him in at night. I know too dogs will be dogs and it is really the owner's fault but it is life and things happen and I just wanted to share cause if you have pets you know what I felt. We love them like family.

  1. I'm so happy that your boy is all right, Elaine! Leo, our indoor-outdoor guy, had a terrible scare a few years ago, too (he was away from home for 3 days) and has never wanted to go outside again. I think your boy will bounce back...they're amazingly resiliant!

How awful that that cowardly, lack-of-courtesy woman didn't even stay around to see if you cat was okay!

  3. Oh, Elaine, I'm so sorry to hear this. Poor little fellow and I'm hoping he recovers nicely. That woman could have at least knocked on your door and told you that she couldn't control her dog! We love our little fizzy faces.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  4. Poor fellow! At least he got a few good scratches in. I had the same thing happen except the dog got one of my chickens. He had the chicken in his mouth and I was shaking the dog to get him to drop the chicken. It survived, but chickens and I were sure traumatized!

  7. Oh...poor little guy...glad he's not hurt too bad. That owner should be ashamed of herself...not controlling her dog like that! He'll be fine in a bit with much love...he'll probably stick close to home for a bit though. Take care!

  12. Maybe, just maybe the woman was trying to get her dog and didn't even know about the cat. She also could have been so upset.
I would keep her inside from now on. Our cat never went outside. She was a ferile new kitty when she was found.
My son had a husky and it killed a cat. They are wild and crazy dogs to control. His onde climbed out a window and was on the roof.
Hope Kitty continues to feel better.

  15. Awww, poor kitty boy. I totally understand how it would hurt so much to see your kitty-friend so traumatized like that. We have two rescues and they are the sweetest friends ever--probably our favorite cats that we've ever had. Hope he gets to feeling better soon, friend.

  22. Poor kitty! He seems to be in good hands, though. Don't worry about his "ptsd": most of my cats have lived traumatising experiences one day or an other, as we live in the countryside and all are ok now... until next time! I'm always more worried than they are!
