Can You Have a Vegetable Garden In Your Front Yard?

After I posted a few pictures of my little vegetable garden the most interesting thing occurred. I received a few comments and e-mails about whether vegetable gardens are appropriate for the front yard. I honestly had never even given it a thought. The reason I grow mine in the front is this is my most sunny planter. But my answer to this question would be yes. Why not grow veggies in your front yard. A tomato plant with dangling red fruit is a thing of beauty to me. If well tended, a front yard vegetable garden patch in your yard is something to be proud of. Lots of people walking by pay nice compliments about my garden and I think the veggie patch is a conversation starter.

Some might ask if others take my veggies without asking and so far no, I have not had that problem, though one year my neighbor was witness to a man pulling up, hopping quickly out of his car, to cut a bouquet of sunflowers. The nerve. He could of asked.

A garden patch is the perfect place to display fun little birdhouses and other goodies you might not display elsewhere. This birdhouse is mounted on an old rusty shovel.

Garden tools are like works of art and are perfect for display.

Here is a view from across the yard. I think a veggie garden in the front yard is as lovely as any flower bed and you gain so much more in return.

  1. Yes, yes, and yes. I love the sunflowers. Food prices are awful and your garden is beautiful. Flowers can always be placed around the edges and help with peat control anyway.

  7. Good answer!
We grow our tomatoes and peppers in the front yard. We get more sun there. I must say .... hubby was a little skeptical when I suggested this, but now he just automatically tills it up for plants.

  8. I have veggies (along with natives and ornamentals in my front yard). I get a lot of compliments (but also some hassle from some people). I think it's wonderful to walk around a neighborhood and have interesting things and plants to look at -- I wish more people would USE their front yards more -- whether for vegetable gardening or playing games or growing flowers with wild abandon, or just sitting and talking. Font yard living and gardening fosters community and increases safety. Your front yard looks magical.

  10. I'm hearing more people are wanting to do things to save energy and the earth; but their HOA has restrictions. Well, I've recently heard more and more people are getting involved in the HOA, giving presentations and educating the 'head' HOA-ers, to the benefits of veggy gardens (where ever they will grow) and solar dryers, recycling, etc. Maybe some of you could canvass the neighbors and petition the HOA as a group? I live in a rural community, and that isn't a problem for me; I'm just passing on what I've read recently. Become Active with the HOA's and not Passive-- you'd be surprised to what can be accomplished!
Best wishes with to you all,
...Elaine, I think your garden is beautiful, and I'm with you. A well maintained garden looks beautiful to the eye, regardless what is growing there, daisies or tomatoes...LOL!

    Love it! Pat

  11. Since I love to see other people's veggie gardens, it helps if it is in the front! I have heard that the Amish women put their vegetable gardens in the front yard, prettied up with flowers, because that is the only "vanity" they are allowed. I don't know if that is true, but when we drive through the Amish cuntryside the gardens are so neat and pretty.

  12. oh I am glad we do not have to deal with a HOA I say neat and tidy who cares. I have a clothes line that rolls in and out like a shade. It is super strong and I can hang a lot of clothes on it. It was not cheap but I think of all the money I have saved in the past 20 years. My daughter asked for one for her wedding shower. whether it is veggies or clothes lines if it is taken care of who should care?

  17. I have to agree with Tirabaralla, I would never plant a vegetable garden in the front yard. I do love yours, so I guess it's just me. I'm loving your sunflowers. I've planted several, but I've seen no sprouts. Any advice? Is it too late for me to try again?

  22. Of course a vegetable garden is appropriate in a front yard! There are a few veggies I wouldn't plant there, such as spinach, because it picks up pollution so would not be safe to eat. But most veggies would be fine AND attractive if well-cared for.

  23. What I want to know, is, who was elected as the garden sheriff......cause I didn't get to vote :)
Gardens can be grown anywhere! In containers, front yards, back yards, side yards..... any where they will grow and thrive :)
Your gardens are neat and tidy, and that is the key to all good gardens.
    Happy gardening !

  24. My neighbors down the street have used their whole front yard as a farm. I think it's against the zoning here, but no one has complained to the city. (Everyone else's yard is immaculately landscaped, so it looks rather out of place.)

I like the way you've done it much better. This way, it makes a cool addition!

    =)

  34. My husband and I just had this conversation about front yard garden. I said, 'If you grow watermelons, I bet people would steal them!" And here's it's sunflowers that are the big draw!

Your garden is beautiful. I would admire but not cut!

  36. I believe in front yard gardens. A county near mine chose to prosecute a man for doing this last year. Ridiculous! It made the national news. In times like these people should be encouraged to do more to provide for themselves, don't you think?
