Funny Friday

This is a very odd post full of rambling thoughts but hey I didn't sleep well last night. Rarely happens thank goodness but I finally got to bed around 1:00. When you have grown young ins' that have friends over, they can wake you up rather rudely. Finally they got a little tongue lashing from me on how the rest of us are functioning on normal schedules and they needed to SHUT UP! I hate being a light sleeper. Above is the sun rising as my old dog woke me to go potty very early. Oh, I am going to need a nap.

I did have the most lovely surprise in that I won a giveaway. Erin at The Painted Garden had a very generous giveaway. I won a new book out Small Space Organizing by Kathryn Bechen and a $50 gift card to Target. Could there be a more perfect giveaway than that. I am so looking forward to pouring through this book. It has lots of how to which I love in an organizing book.

Oh and I gained almost five pounds over the holidays. I am glad to say after getting off the sugar wagon, I have lost it but really, if I want to be honest I should lose another ten at least. I have to stop baking things like this.

My kids actually made these. They are on the hunt for the perfect scratch brownie recipe.

I am spending more time out here working hard in the garden. This time of year I start at one end and work around the perimeter of the yard and clean out all the planters.

It is hard work but oh how I love it. I have really been thinking of changing the way I garden this year. I usually spend more than I should on annuals for pots and beds. This year, I am going to change my focus. I will be spending less on flowers and putting in a new area to grow more veggies. I feel the money will be better spent this way. This jives more with my frugal goals this year. I have a small yard with only a couple of sunny spots. So I will maximize these areas. Besides watering pots every single day takes lots of time and water which is expensive. I will start a few geraniums from cuttings this week as they are good drought tolerant plants here. AND FREE!

  2. You are just taunting those of us in the north with talk of gardening! By the way, pots of lettuce love semi shade areas and look very pretty! ~ Maureen

  3. You WON how fun!! I know all to well how loud teenagers can be. My son had a drum set in his bedroom when he was a teen. We had to set some rules about that! Love to garden also. Blessing to you.

  4. It does my gardening soul good to see someone out there playing in the dirt, even if I can't! No gardening here until April at the earliest!

  6. I need to get out there and clean out my dead plants from the deck garden. I had such a 'bad' gardening year in 2011 since I was gone so much. I'm hoping for better results this year. I hate when I can't sleep and the harder I try the worse it is. Nap time I say! Congrats on the book and GC win! Nice!!! hugs, Linda

Your garden is just lovely. You made my day by posting all your beautiful flowers. It gives me hope that spring is not to far away. *sighs* Just can't wait. Think I have a touch of the winter blues.

  13. With the ever-declining value of the dollar, I think it's a good idea for all of us to be putting in a vegetable garden, even if we only have space on our decks. Every bit helps!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gained over Thanksgiving and Christmas, or should I say, the entire time from mid Nov. to mid January! And now at long last I'm off the carb trail. Good luck to you too.

    Have a great weekend.

  14. Try herbs. They help keep the bugs at bay. They stay pretty during hot times. And the smell! Try some lemon balm and lemon verbena, which you can add to your iced tea. Rosemary for all the cooking you do. Girl, you need an herb garden. Your little one would love all the different aromas.

  15. Our yard also has only a couple of sunny spots, which is such a challenge. I'm itching to get out and dig in the dirt, but it will be awhile, I'm afraid!

  17. In Arizona my flowers have been blooming beautifully. I keep them in pots cuz it makes me hand water and that makes me get outside. I even have tomatoes. A volunteer tomato came up but isn't putting on tomatoes so by the middle of Feb. it will go. I'm planning my vegetables & herbs as well. Happy gardening. Thanks for sharing.

  18. I am in SoCal too and I have never taken geranium cuttings. It's never even crossed my mind to! Please let me know how you successfully do this? I have several geraniums right now (one is blooming away beautifully)-let me know if you want any! Blessings, Steph.
