Update on Gardening Experiments

Time for an update on my garden experiments and my attempt to grow as much of our food in our small city  yard.
Remember I was going to attempt to grow potatoes in a large pot. Here they are last month.

Look at them now. They are huge. When the plants start to die back I will see what I have in there.

Remember the celery ends I planted. One died but another is doing fine. I have even started some by seed which is exciting as I have read it is hard to germinate.

There's those baby stalks now.

Now here is my continuing frustration, my grape vine. I planted it four years ago and I still have not seen any grapes or any sign of them. I have asked the nursery and they said it takes a few years but I am losing my patience with it. I WANT GRAPES.

See the little vine starting up in the pot? That is the sweet baby watermelon I am attempting to grow from a pot. It can ramble through the planter but the soil is poor here. I just mulched it with some home made compost. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

  1. Everything looks great! We have grapes, but I think we planted them at least 20 years ago. I can't remember when we started to get grapes. I would think you will be getting some soon.
Have a great weekend! I have to work:(

  5. I've got celery, onions, and leeks to plant like you did. On the grapes...do they need a polinator like some fruit trees do....a male and a female? Did you add soil to those potatoes until the soil reached the top? I can't remember how you did that. Everything looks great!

  6. Wow! More than having a green thumb, you have the patience and love for each green creation. You are so lucky to have them in your home.

By the way, if it's not too much to ask, I'm hosting a "beautiful sunday" link up post. Any post that reflects pieces of beautiful things to experiences are welcome. Hope you can link up with me.

    Have a great weekend!

  7. It looks like your experiment is going well! And by next season you will be an old pro and ready to dedicate more of the garden space to growing veggies. I'm watching with interest, because I love to try this.

  8. I'm real interested to see how your POT potatoes grow. We plant ours in a raised bed about 5'by 5' and we just dug ours out this past week-- we got almost 30 lbs I'd say. They were red potatoes....Mmmmm.
As to Grapes- we planted a grape vine about 8 years ago and we started seeing grapes right away-- in fact, some 'Cracker Jack'(no one in this family-long story) sprayed weed killer on it when they were trying to kill poison Ivy...anyway, I just noticed this year it didn't all die-- So we're hoping to let it sit there through summer and transplant it in the Fall. We'll see how that goes.

I tried the celery plants (by planting the bottoms) ...it didn't work for me, and I haven't tried to germinate any. I'd be interested in following this progress too!

Thanks for the garden up date-- I love learning how others are doing, so I can be a more successful...or smarter, either way. ;)

  9. Love all the plants you are growing...even the celery! My vine took at least 5 years before it began to fruit and then it really went all out. Hope yours does this year! Have a good weekend. Joan

  14. Things are looking good, Elaine. It will be interesting to see how those potatoes in the pail turn out. I have never grown celery from seed...or celery period, for that matter.

I am doing a small pumpkin patch for the grandkids this year. I just tilled it all up today. I can't wait to see the vines growing. xo Diana

  15. Isn't it just the most exciting feeling in the world to see something you have planted, take root and reach for the sun? I've never tried potatoes but yours seem to be thriving! I can't wait for my little flower containers to start blooming, but it's great being able to take regular photographs to see each change. I take new pictures every Saturday now. Have a great weekend, Sally xx

  19. I am going to try growing celery stalks too. You have inspired me to give it a try. Don't know what to tell you about the grapes. They grow like weeds here in Idaho and we have to give them away because we can't possibly eat them all. Maybe it's our climate, I don't know.

    Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  22. Look at you!! I may have to start container gardening as my health doesn't allow me to have full-fledge garden plots anymore. It's always exciting to see the new growth coming up in anticipation of what's to come soon! There's nothing better than fresh from the garden produce!
