Egg Count

The eggs are here!! I have been gathering at least one a day now since Saturday.  There is one above in a little egg cup that was sent to me by Debbie of My Vintage Daydreams. She is such a sweetheart.

Right here was my first REAL egg. One with a shell. I ate it for breakfast right away.

The yolks are so golden and the egg white is nice and firm, not all runny and watery.

Here is Q with the first egg she gathered. She wanted me to cook it for her. When I saw she had barely ate any of it I asked her why and she said, "Because it tastes like chicken breath." I died. Does not surprise me as she doesn't really like eggs.

These are my two girls that are laying.
Flower Muffin

And Rocky.

Look at those wide hips now to pass all those eggs.

The first eggs were so tiny but you can see from day to day they are getting a little bigger. Some of the chickens are quite squawky in the mornings now before they settle into a nesting box. I love the sound but I sure hope it does not bother my neighbors. I find it a more pleasing noise than when my dog barks but you never know how other folks might feel about it. Chickens are legal in our city or at least hens, but I don't want to bother anyone.

  2. My daughter knows someone that has fresh eggs. He sent some home to us and they do have a bit more yellow of a yolk I noticed. The taste is a bit different, but, all in all I liked them. My husband keeps asking where he can find small eggs. The stores only carry medium, large and extra large. Guess I've never heard of small eggs. Not sure why he wants them either, but he does most of the cooking especially weekend breakfasts....I'm sure someday I will find out. Very cute post....kids say the funniest things sometimes don't they!

  6. I burst out laughing when I read about the chicken breath! Then, I looked around to see who saw me! Children are so precious, they tell it just as it is. How fun to see the fruits of your labors.

  9. "chicken breath"...totally cracking me up!!! Reminds me of when my boys were little and super picky eaters, they LOVED chicken, so everything I put on their plates (and I do mean everything) that was new to them, I told them it was chicken and they would gobble it up.

  10. That is so exciting! Home-grown eggs do actually have a flavor, unlike most store bought eggs which are kind of flavorless, imo. I had forgotten (having grown up with home delivery of milk, butter and eggs from a local farmer back in the '60's), until I got eggs from my own chickens.

Mine get pretty raucous when they are laying, too, and now everyone around here says "oh, you're the one with the chickens!", but I've never had anyone complain -- I think there are too many barking dogs for anyone to throw the first stone. At least the chickens don't make noise after dark!

Wait until you make some egg salad with your new eggs! It will be beauteous!

  11. Well congrats on your eggs, what lovely girls you have.

I would so much rather hear the cackle of a chicken, then the roar of the lawnmowers, and the blowers....

  16. Congrats! The squacking will go away once they're more comfortable laying. My barred rock laid the biggest eggs!

  19. I know what you mean about the chicken noises vs. barking dogs.
I don't mind the chicken noises. But I must say, round about nap time, George decides it's crowing time! Why? i don't know.

love Q's assessment of the taste of eggs. made me chuckle... Pat

  23. Before we got our own chickens, a friend sent us some fresh ones. I scambled them for my husband but he couldn't eat them! They had the STRONGEST smell to them. When we got our own I told my husband that their egss better not be like his friends. Thank goodness they are not, my husband said it makes a big difference in what you are feeding them!

  25. I have 9 hens...I really enjoy my ole girls. I can't say I can really taste a difference in store bought eggs or home grown but they are richer in color. I prefer them in baking for sure.

  26. How nice that you have fresh eggs at home! They are just so creamy. And so convenient. I love the laying sounds too. And they can be loud! I just love what tiny kids say! Recently one of mine leaned up against me and said,"You're so soft!" I said thank you, and my daughter said "She meant it as a compliment!" I certainly took it like that. You don't just get soft overnight! Haha!
