Frugal Challenge Update-Making Ground Hamburger Leaner

Once in a while I will pick up some ground beef  on sale that is higher in fat content than I'd like so I just cook it up and pour it into a colander in the sink and rinse really well with hot water to get as much of the grease/fat out of it. Wipe the pan out with a paper towel and just pour the meat back in to reheat and season.
My mom used to do this and when I was a kid and I would always ask her why she was washing our meat.

Another trip to Georges. Three loaves of sourdough, lettuce, peaches, cantaloupe and watermelon the kids devoured as soon as I got home. $7.23.

Combined all my trips yesterday to save gas so I stopped at CVS. Total out of pocket including tax was $1.99 for the four items below.

  1. I've never washed my ground beef but I have drained it and let it sit on paper towels to soak up the excess. Nice job on the shopping!

  2. I wash my higher fat ground beef too, except I usually cook in a dutch oven. Then i cover it with hot water and pour off, repeating until I don't see fat floating on the top of the water.

I think it is a great way to save calories while I spend a little less.

  3. Good shopping I have never washed my hamburg but I have drained it. I would be worried about the grease going down my drain.

  4. I do that with my ground beef too, it seems fattier now than it did a year ago. I guess that's how they save money.
You did well on your drug store items!

  9. Sure is an easy way to reduce the fat, and to make ground beef a little bit healthier.

  10. I have always rinsed my ground beef. A friend actually boils her ground beef, strains out the meat, then chills the water/broth, takes the solid fat off and uses the rest as beef broth (simmered down a bit more I believe).
